Nigeria’s hope of being certified Polio-free by the World Health Organisation (WHO), next year, might have been dashed, as two new cases have been reported. Health authorities in Abuja have, however, remained silent, with key officials refusing to be quoted.

The two cases of Wild Polio Virus (WPV) were discovered in Gwarzo and Jere LGAs of Borno State, yesterday. A top health official said the country has decided to term it a ‘suspicion’, while it seeks the best approach to break the news to the public.

It was learnt WHO could announce the development at a press conference in Geneva tomorrow. Last month, July 24, Nigeria celebrated two years without any new case of Polio because the last known infection was in July 2014. It is uncertain how the WHO will handle the resurgence.

WHO and Rotary, which co-funds polio eradication, warned against relaxing surveillance and maintaining commitment. Last week, a number of civil society organisations raised concern about N12.8bn immunisation fund yet to be released only 4 months to the end of 2016.

“We have less than five months to the end of 2016 yet nothing has been released for immunization, for procurement of vaccines and other logistics,” said Dr Aminu Magashi, project director for Community Health and Research Initiative, part of the coalition Partnership for Advocacy for Child and Family Health, PACFaH.

“As a nation we cannot continue to depend on development partners to buy the vaccines we need in the country yet we have funds for such purposes in our budget,” he added
LASUTH Helipad4

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday commissioned the first state-owned Helipad for medical emergencies in Nigeria at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.
The governor, during the commissioning, said that the upgrading of the 24/7-bed and five Theatre Suits for pregnant women, popularly called Ayinke House, would be ready for use by 2017.

Governor Ambode, who also inspected medical facilities at the LASUTH complex, said as part of efforts to transform the health sector in the State for optimal performance, the Bola Tinubu Health and Diagnostic Centre will soon become operational, while approval had been granted for the rehabilitation, upgrade and bulk purchase of medical equipments required in 20 Secondary and 21 Primary health facilities across the State.

He added that a 27-bed Critical Care Unit was commissioned in LASUTH to provide life/organ support last month.
“This Helipad being commissioned today is a lifesaving asset and critical complement to the efficient functioning of this Unit and other emergency services being rendered by the State. The Helipad will also aid the movement of patients from remote areas where healthcare facilities to provide the level of emergency medicine required are not readily available.

Over the years, we have witnessed emergency situations which require timely movement of victims to appropriate medical facilities. Keeping in mind that every minute matters in securing the lives of people involved in these incidents, the usual movement by road is not the best option in such situations. Helicopters have therefore become an efficient and reliable option which can only be made possible with the availability of helipads within the hospital environment.

Given the status of LASUTH, as the State flagship tertiary health institution, offering referral services for other public and private medical institutions, it was obvious the helipad had to be located here,” the Governor said.

Boko Haram, which has lost most of the territory it controlled 18 months ago, is fighting to overthrow Nigeria's government.

Its seven-year insurgency has left 20,000 people dead, mainly in the country's north-east.
In the interview in IS's weekly Arabic magazine al-Naba, Mr Barnawi said his group "remained a force to be reckoned with" and said it had been drawing new recruits.

He described the group's battle against West African states as a war fought by Muslims against "apostates" and "crusaders".

This was made known, yesterday, in a circular posted on the CBN website. Aside from this approval, the CBN also ordered banks and other financial institutions to remove fixed interest rate on credit cards and discontinue actual address verification as a condition for account opening for customers with the BVN.

Also, that banks should begin to embed the BVN on all payment cards issued henceforth to facilitate off-line BVN verification and biometric-based customer authentication in such payment devices as the ATM, POS Terminal, kiosks etc.

In approving cheque deposits into savings accounts, CBN limited the daily deposit to only N2m per customer in a day. Prior to this development, bank customers could only make cheque deposits into their current accounts

An Emirates Boeing 777 with 300 people on board crash landed at Dubai International Airport Wednesday, skidding along a runway and erupting into an intense fire — but the airline said all onboard survived.
An engine was torn from the right wing of the plane as it scraped to a halt, forcing passengers and crew to evacuate before the aircraft was gutted by fire.

Flights were halted at the airport — the busiest in the Middle East — as black smoke billowed from the wreckage.

Eyewitness Osama Alghamdi, a 23-year-old student, told NBC News that he saw a "huge, huge fire" and then "two explosions" while heading to his gate for a flight to Glasgow, Scotland.
"Everything took about 30 to 35 minutes," he added. "It was so scary."

Despite the scale of the fire and the speed at which it engulfed the jet, the evacuation of 282 passengers and 18 crew through inflatable slides appeared to have been successful.

"We can confirm that there are no fatalities among our passengers and crew," Emirates said

Doctors are trying to determine which limb is controlled by what brain before attempting to separate a pair of conjoined twins who share every vital organ but their brains. The boys, who are not named, were delivered in Mumbai at Sion Hospital in India last Wednesday.

The boys, who weigh a combined 10 lbs., share a heart, kidneys, liver, abdomen and pelvis, Central European News (CEN) reported.

“In medical literature, we have only seen two such cases where one baby has survived when twins had a fused common heart,” Dr. Paras Kothari, head of pediatric surgery, told CEN.
The boys were delivered via caesarian section, and their mother is said to be stable but extremely distraught. Before an operation is planned doctors must determine which brain affects which limb, the report said.

“When they are asleep, we will pinch each limb to check which baby reacts. Based on our understanding of whether one baby has all sets of limbs intact, we will proceed to separate him from the second,” Kothari told CEN.
Conjoined twins occur once in every 200,000 live births.

On July 24, 2016, Stephen Ngila, 34, chopped off the hands of Jackline Mwende, 27, over her inability to conceive after seven years of marriage. “I could not understand why he was blaming me yet we had gone to hospital last year and the doctors had said he was the one with issues, which could be corrected.

He moved out of our house three months ago and came back on Sunday (July 24) at around 8.30pm. When I opened the door, he said ‘today is your last day’ and started slashing me with the panga,” said Mwende.

She said Ngila refused to follow up on his treatment. Relatives, who want the husband to face the full wrath of the law, say Mwende had always wanted to leave her abusive husband but was being persuaded, by her pastor, to stay back.

The man was arrested on Monday July 25 at around 1pm in Machakos town hours after he fled his home in Masii. he was arraigned at Wamunyu law courts where he denied the charge. He will be remanded until August 5.

According to a report by Vanguardngr, the G.O of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Adeboye, has counselled youths of the church on marriage, saying “don’t ever marry outside RCCG. The reason is that if you are both from the same church even when trouble comes it is easier for the pastors to handle it!
Don’t marry a girl simply because she can sing! In the choir there are some people that can sing but they are fallen angels! Marry a prayer warrior! If a girl cannot pray for one hour, don’t marry her. Don’t marry a girl who is lazy!  Don’t marry a girl who cannot cook, she needs to know how to do chores and cook because you cannot afford to be eating out all the time. Don’t marry a girl who is worldly! If you do, you have carried what you’ll worship for the rest of your life

Gov. Okorocha plans to reduce work days per week to 3, so as to cut cost on salaries

The Imo State governor said this, today, while briefing journalists on the state of affairs in Imo. He said the reduction of work days would enable workers to attend to other activities that would generate money to supplement their monthly salaries to take care of their families. .

His words: “I encourage Imo workers to find additional things to do to support their families because of the economic situation we are facing in Nigeria. We are considering to reduce the working days from five to three in Imo, so that workers will use the rest of the days to work and support their families."

He added that Imo government was equally planning to review workers’ salaries downward. He said that in spite of the current payment of 70% of salaries to workers, the state still paid the highest salary scale among South-Eastern states of Abia, Anabmbra, Ebonyi and Enugu.

His words: “Directors in these other SE states receive something a little above N90, 000 while in Imo they receive more than N100, 000. We intend to clear salary arrears up to July by next week. After that, we will consider downward review of salary to workers to be at par with other SE states.".... n anyone who doesn't like it, can resign....

Mikel Obi

Chelsea FC midfielder and Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi has been named Captain of Team Nigeria to the 2016 Olympic Games at Rio in Brazil, which begins on August 5.

A statement on Tuesday by Nneka Ikem-Anibeze, Special Assistant on Media to Youths and Sports Minister Solomon Dalung, also named Funke Oshonaike as the Assistant Team Captain.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mikel is one of the three over-aged players invited to the national under-23 football team for the Games.

He is making his first appearance at an Olympic Games, after missing out on the 2008 edition in Beijing, China where he was widely expected to make an appearance.
Table tennis star Oshonaike is making her sixth appearance at the Olympics after she made her debut at the Atlanta Games in 1996.
“Mikel and Oshonaike were chosen because of their consistency, patriotism and dedication to national assignments.
Mikel is a young, patriotic footballer of international status and we believe he will be a role model to the upcoming athletes, while Oshonaike is experienced and is one of the oldest athletes in the team.
We believe that their combined efforts will bring goodwill to Team Nigeria and project the county’s image positively to the world,” Ikem-Anibeze said in the statement.
NAN reports that the Dream Team VI, Team Nigeria’s male football side, is expected to depart for Rio from Atlanta in the U.S., where they have been training, on Friday.
Other athletes making up the team are however expected to leave Nigeria on the same day from Abuja.

Yahoo first put itself up for sale in February and it fielded multiple bids from many different types of buyers — supposedly as many as 40 at one point.

Those included AT&T; Quicken Loans founder Dan Gilbert with financial backing from Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett; and private equity firms TPG and Vector Capital Management.
According to Re/code, Yahoo informed the other bidders on Saturday that Verizon had won the process.

“Yahoo is a company that has changed the world, and will continue to do so through this combination with Verizon and AOL,” said Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer in a press release. “The sale of our operating business, which effectively separates our Asian asset equity stakes, is an important step in our plan to unlock shareholder value for Yahoo. This transaction also sets up a great opportunity for Yahoo to build further distribution and accelerate our work in mobile, video, native advertising and social.”

Tim Armstrong, CEO of AOL when Verizon acquired it for $4.4 billion last year, will run a new group at Verizon that brings together AOL and Yahoo, he confirmed on Bloomberg TV on Monday. “Our mission at AOL is to build brands people love, and we will continue to invest in and grow them,” he said in a press release. “Yahoo has been a long-time investor in premium content and created some of the most beloved consumer brands in key categories like sports, news and finance … We have enormous respect for what Yahoo has accomplished.”

Marissa Mayer was generally not expected to stay on board, but said in a Yahoo blog post on Monday that in fact she will. “For me personally, I’m planning to stay,” she wrote. “I love Yahoo… It’s important to me to see Yahoo into its next chapter.” She did not specify what role she would serve.

Verizon’s acquisition is of “core” Yahoo, which includes search, email, advertising products and the media business (including Yahoo Finance). It did not acquire Yahoo’s 15% stake in Alibaba, its 35% stake in Yahoo Japan, or Yahoo’s patents, which some analysts suggested during the bidding process were valuable.

As Suntrust wrote in a note this month, “Yahoo is running two auctions in parallel – core sale and Excalibur patent portfolio – so we wouldn’t be surprised to see multiple winners.” If there is a winner of Yahoo’s patents, it remains to be seen who that is and how much they will pay. Suntrust predicted the Yahoo sale would generate $6 billion, “in one or multiple transactions.”
Verizon has made a string of acquisitions in an apparent effort to move beyond a telecom provider into a media-and-mobile-advertising powerhouse that can compete with Google. Many believe buying Yahoo is a savvy move for Verizon

In addition to getting the fifth-most visited web site in the US, Verizon gets assets like Tumblr, Flickr, Polyvore and digital ad tools Flurry and BrightRoll.
Last week, Yahoo reported second-quarter earnings of 9 cents per share and revenue of $1.31 billion, which beat analyst expectations. Revenue of its MaVeNS division (mobile, video, native and social), which accounts for more than 30% of Yahoo’s revenue, rose 25% last quarter. Yahoo shares are up 32% in the last six months during the public sale process.

Verizon reports its own Q2 earnings on Tuesday, and reportedly wanted to announce the Yahoo deal before that.

My dear fans, P-Square is back. Ours is a journey that started from our mother’s womb. It was a journey that started from Primary School, continued to St. Murumba College, to when we were in University in Abuja. It was a journey in which we shared childhood memories and grown-up dreams.  We are back  because brothers do not let each other wander in the dark alone. We are back because we have tried the lonely road and it was not the same.
I want to take responsibility for what has happened and sincerely apologise to you our fans. For supporting us throughout this journey we owed you so much more than what you have had to endure and I apologise for that. We are embarking now on a new journey with exciting new management (Jude Okoye), new music and new ideas.
We cannot thank you enough for all your prayers and support throughout this difficult period. Maya Angelou once said that brotherhood is a condition that people have to work at. We will continue to work on that and you can be prepared to be blown away by this new phase of P-Square.

Governor-Abdulaziz-Yari

Six governors from each geo-political zone of the country are concluding plans to attend a vocational programme in Germany.

According to PUNCH, the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Governor of Zamfara state, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari, said this to correspondents after the forum’s meeting in Abuja on Wednesday night.

“We received some presentations from the German ambassador prior to our trip to Germany for the vocational programme. We also received presentation from Vodacom. The firm made presentation on the areas we are going to partner such as in the areas of health and agriculture,” he was quoted as saying.

Following the development, Human Rights Activist, Femi Falana (SAN) blasted the governors, saying that it is “a decoy for summer vacation”.
“There are here enough solutions to the problems of the nation which the governors are not attending to. You said the country is broke, governors are embarking on jamboree to Germany.
We are going to appeal to the German authority not to give them visa so that they can stay at home and work. We will contact the German government not to be party to this wastage by the Nigerian government.
The Federal Government has just adopted about 147-page report on agriculture. How many of them have read the report? I think it’s just a decoy for a summer holiday,” he told PUNCH’s correspondent on the telephone.

The immediate-past president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor has opened up on his reign as the leader of CAN.

Ayo spoke to Daily Sun on how he weathered the storm as leader of the apex Christian body in the country and how he was betrayed and insulted by Christians.

He said Christians plotted against him and equally insulted him even when he put his life on the line for them.
Oritsejafor said he took over the mantle of leadership at the most trying times in the country.
“We came in a period the challenges of the church had reached a point that lots of Christians in Nigeria had been displaced from their home and churches.
“Some pastors, particularly, in northern Nigeria were closing their churches. Lots of Nigerians had become internally displaced persons in their homes,” he said.

He called on Nigerians, particularly the Christian faithful, to stand behind the new president of CAN, Pastor Samson Ayokunle and his team in order to withstand the challenges ahead.
